The Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Saar in Saarbrücken (HBKsaar) is the only art school in Saarland. It was founded in 1989 and emerged from the Staatliche Schule für Kunst und Kunstgewerbe (State School for Art and Crafts) founded in 1924 and the Schule für Kunst und Handwerk (school for art and crafts) founded in 1946. Between 1971 and 1989, it was affiliated with the Saarland University of Applied Sciences, which is today known as the Saarland University of Applied Sciences.
The educational concept is project-oriented and interdisciplinary. Lessons are largely carried out as studio and project work with integrated specialist and theoretical courses. The education structure, which is based on flexibility, therefore provides for a high degree of permeability between the individual study programmes and independent work.
