Simple door aesthetics

All in One solution for a door handle

Until now, door handles have been characterised by modular product systems - consisting of handles, rosettes, WC bolts, coloured keys and much more. The company Griffwerk has now simplified this modular system. The result is an all-in-one solution that combines all the functions of a door handle in one form.

A door handle is not just a door handle

You don't think much about a door handle in everyday life - you just use it. What design it has to have in order to match the door and the design requirements of the house or flat owner is often pushed into the background. Particularly because many doors that are bought already have a door handle.

However, this has changed in recent years. Influenced by the minimalist design idea, the design of a door handle has also been reconsidered: do you really need a rosette or can the functions be made to disappear in the handle and the door so that the handle forms a unit with the door?

Griffwerk shows what is possible in terms of design and function. As early as 2008, the company presented the first rosette-less handle. At that time, the Frame model became a pioneer in the industry and set new standards. With the new product R8 One, another rosette-less door handle now follows, which also has the Smart2lock locking technology integrated directly into the handle.

All in One: New hardware technology

Overly complex modular product systems are out of fashion. The development of computers shows the way: In the past, you needed a computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse, extra loudspeakers, an external hard drive and maybe a touchpad. Today, a tablet is sufficient as a mobile end device for many people. And so it is with a door handle.

At Griffwerk, this design approach is called All in One. The word One stands for maximum reduction and is the programmatic intention for the design line. The handles of the product line sit directly on the door leaf and thus create a minimalist, new door aesthetic. Locking rosettes, such as WC and key rosettes, are thus superfluous.

All the functions that a door handle must and can perform are condensed into one form. Nevertheless, the handle fits all doors with standard locks. The R8 One and Avus One handle variants are currently available in the One product line.

Both handles speak a reduced design language and yet offer a pleasant gripping experience. The softly rounded rear area has been contrasted with a clearly contrasted front area that runs parallel to the door surface. This gives the handles visual calm and pleasant clarity.

The new R8 One model also recently received the German Design Award 2021 in the category Excellent Product Design - Building and Elements. The jury's statement at the award ceremony: "The timelessly elegant lever handle not only does without a rose, no, the locking mechanism has also been integrated directly into the handle. A consistently reduced design whose purism is underlined by the clear design language."

Smart2lock with one hand

User studies have shown that you need too many different handles to lock a door. There is a simpler way: the intelligent locking mechanism Smart2lock, developed by Griffwerk, has been integrated into the One product line. With Smart2lock, doors can be closed and locked by 1-hand operation. The locking slide was simply placed on the neck of the handle within thumb's reach. The intelligent locking technology does not require electricity, software or maintenance.

Griffwerk is thus committed to the philosophy of low-tech. When developing low-tech products, great importance is attached to sustainability and waste avoidance. In contrast to high-tech products, they are supposed to be more robust, less susceptible to faults, require no energy and use fewer resources in production. They are particularly convincing because of their long service life.
