Number of the month: Cookware

Together with GfK, we present facts and figures about the furniture market every month. This month's topic is the purchase of cookware, as is possible in furniture stores, for example.

...of sales in the cookware segment were generated by set sales in the first half of 2020. Sets accounted for 14 percent of pans, and as much as 38 percent of pots. Compared to the first half of 2019, sales of sets thus rose by 7 percent, while sales of individual pots and pans declined by 5 percent. Furniture stores and Internet retailers in particular recorded a disproportionately high share of pot and pan sets sold.

Looking at the overall cookware market in Germany, the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic are also being felt here. GfK recorded a slight decline of 2 percent in terms of both value and volume. In particular, sales in the stationary retail sector, including the furniture stores, were significantly down on the same period in the previous year. The winner, however, is online retailing, which increased its sales by 44% in the first half of the year.

The first figures for the second half of the year show a recovery in stationary retail. However, whether it will be possible to compensate fully for the losses of the first half of the year depends on the continuing incidence of infections and the associated consumer mood. Internet sales continue to develop above average.
