Outstanding design quality
The hottest time of the year calls for reliable sources of shade that provide a welcome cool retreat to enjoy free time, whether it’s spent eating, reading or relaxing.
This could take the form of the textile sun protection umbrella Palma by Belgian manufacturer Royal Botania, which has won awards for the innovation, including a Red Dot Best of the Best for outstanding design quality. The minimalist garden umbrella brings to mind the structure of a tree with a straight trunk.
It owes its pure design to an ingenious system: all the innovative mechanics are hidden inside the lightweight aluminium shaft. The base is available with a white, cappuccino or black coating, while the umbrella fabric comes in eight expressive colours, including turquoise, lilac and grass-green. It is equipped with an UV-resistant acrylic fabric spanning three metres and opens automatically.
Clear, high-quality design
The Meteo parasol was created by designer Konstantin Grcic for Kettal. It features an aluminium structure in a clear, contemporary design. It is available with a manual roller system or a gas-pressurised spring: the basic model uses a manual pulley system, while the high-end model is equipped with an integrated gas piston to assist the opening and closing of the parasol. The textile sun protection system comes in a harmoniously graduated colour palette, and the base plate is made from sheet metal or cast iron.
Colourful stripes or light and square
A striking Asian domed roof is the first thing that comes to mind when you see the Pagoda Umbrella by Weishäupl. This impression is even stronger when its synthetic fibre covering is filled with colourful stripes. It is based on a stable construction made from powder-coated aluminium and reinforced with fibreglass rods.
A pulley system makes opening and closing the umbrella child’s play, and an articulated joint allows the sun protection to be targeted more effectively. Weishäupl produces the umbrella in two sizes. The smaller version can be equipped with a crank mechanism as an option.
The solid Atlantis sun umbrella by Danish manufacturer Skagerak is available in a round and a square design. The company says that its removable, washable polyester fabric has a high sun protection factor and high UV resistance. The Scandinavian-look frame is made from naturally weather-resistant meranti wood.
Fabrics with a fine metal layer
With Metal Base, Création Baumann has launched a high-quality collection of fabrics that are metallised with brass, copper, aluminium or steel. This is both aesthetically pleasing and multifunctional. The curtain fabrics simultaneously screen out glare and intrusive stares whilst providing protection against heat and UV ingress at the window.
It is the thin layer of metal on the reverse of the 300 cm wide textiles that makes them so versatile. The high reflection of the sun’s rays reduces light incidence to generate soft, diffused light that is free from glare, whilst simultaneously reducing heat ingress.
Roller blind system with a host of options
Design duo Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec developed the Roller Blinds for textile manufacturer Kvadrat. Featuring an aesthetically stunning design, the modular roller blind system allows the indoor climate to be optimised. The made-to-order system is manufactured from durable aluminium.
Infinitely adjustable, the Roller Blinds allow light levels, glare and temperature to be controlled, thereby creating a comfortable environment. Thanks to their patented fixing mechanism, Kvadrat Roller Blinds are easy and flexible to fit.
As there are no visible screws or hinges, the cassette integrates seamlessly into the interior. The system can be operated with a chain, a switch or by remote control.
Weatherproof outdoor fabric
The Sonnen-Klar fabric quality is part of Christian Fischbacher’s outdoor collection. It combines an indoor feel with highly technical textile properties for outdoor use.
Innovative colour pigments are worked into the fibre to generate extremely high light fastness and prevent fading, even with intense exposure to UV rays. The plain coloured fabrics are also weather-resistant.
Their soft surface makes them ideally suited for upholstery and cushions, but also for curtains. Direct sunlight and other weather influences are no match for this robust outdoor fabric.
The number of hours of sunshine and warm days are set to remain at a consistently high level in coming years, or they may even increase further. Health-conscious end consumers will therefore be increasingly willing to invest in effective, beautifully designed sun protection.
