With a new augmented reality app, the design platform stilwerk aims not only to offer its customers a special shopping experience but also to provide bricks-and-mortar retailers with an innovative tool for on-the-spot specialist advice at the same time.
The app will allow potential customers the opportunity to try out furniture from stilwerk virtually in their own homes before buying it. All the user needs to do is open the app and select the piece of furniture in the desired configuration to visualise it in the room in front of him-/herself via the screen on his/her smartphone or tablet.
The objects appear in a realistic proportion to the size of the room and can be viewed from all sides and moved around. The chosen piece of furniture can also be purchased directly via a link to physical retailers.
What is more, the app uses artificial intelligence to analyse the user’s furnishing style and gives personal style tips, such as the best sofa colour to go with the rug or which coffee table will match the sofa.
Manufacturers and bricks-and-mortar retailers in stilwerk’s design destinations also stand to benefit from the new technology, which it is hoped will bridge the gap between online and offline.
For example, the stilwerk AR app supports specialist consultants on site by making it possible for the customer to experience desired product configurations in 3D, for which it has not been possible to find space in the showroom – all without having to pore over thick catalogues.
Sales discussions have a longer lasting impact on customers too, thanks to the fun of applying the app to their own homes.
The AR-App was developed in cooperation with the technology startup RoomAR and presented on September 20, 2018 parallel to the Berlin Design Week. “stilwerk has decided to take this innovative path with RoomAR because the augmented reality solution is state of the art from a technological perspective and will release as-yet untapped potential in the furniture market,” according to the owner of stilwerk, Alexander Garbe.
He goes on to explain that many customers would normally hesitate to make a purchasing decision because they have difficulty imagining what a piece of furniture from the shop would look like in their own home. Thanks to the technological innovation from stilwerk and RoomAR, furniture-buying decisions should be easier in the future. The AR-App is now available in the iOS Store.
