Intelligent and comfortable designs

Sustainably manufactured luxury furniture from Lithuania for German interior designers

Some time ago, EMKO, a Lithuanian-based furniture design and manufacturing company, received a call from Germany with an unusual request: a customer wanted to order an EMKO table that she had seen during a tour of supermodel Claudia Schiffer's house. In the meantime, EMKO has established itself as a reliable partner in creating intelligent, comfortable designs for living and working areas among German customers: almost 20 percent of the company's products are sold in Germany.

The EMKO design brand sold its first designs into the German market in 2013 during the imm cologne trade fair. Erika Markovska Mikulskienė, founder of EMKO: "It was kind of a shot in the dark at the time, but at the fair we realised that EMKO is very well received by German customers and designers in terms of style, quality and needs."

In 2016, the German design duo Büro Famos became aware of EMKO at the imm cologne. The sustainably produced, elegant and functional Lithuanian designs were a good fit with the duo's philosophy and previous work. This is how the collaboration began, creating, among other things, the HAT PENDANT LAMP. Today, EMKO distributes its products in 29 countries and is often contacted by interior designers looking for new products.

In the world of modern furniture, EMKO stands out with its clean and simple-looking pieces that are reminiscent of Scandinavian design. The Lithuanian company’s approach is bolder, however, bringing greater warmth and coziness.  "It may sound paradoxical, but the simpler the design, the harder it is to produce high-quality and durable furniture that can be passed down through generations. It is up to us to achieve outstanding design quality, perfect our craftsmanship and use materials that ensure a long-lasting relationship between the customer and the piece of furniture they acquire," adds Erika Markovska Mikulskienė.

German customers love inventiveness and reliability

What German customers appreciate about EMKO is that the company pays attention to building customer relationships. EMKO sees itself as being in the long-term furniture business. Customer service is the key. German customers trust the high level of responsiveness and that their specifications are implemented well, but also with fresh, unexpected ideas. The courage has paid off. EMKO has now established itself as a reliable partner in creating intelligent, comfortable designs for living and working areas: almost 20 percent of the company's products are sold on the German market.

EMKO is a good example of today's Lithuanian furniture industry. Lithuanian designers have made a name for themselves with a distinctive blend of Nordic and Western European furniture traditions, a highly developed technological base, creative skills and excellent customer service. Lithuanian culture is also characterised by its close relationship with nature, which results in a natural striving for sustainability. The furniture industry makes a significant contribution to the Lithuanian economy, with up to 86 per cent of total sales in the sector coming from exports. Lithuanian manufacturers are mainly targeted by buyers from Germany, Sweden, Norway and the UK.
